Laser hair removal is a thoroughly tested, clinically proven method that helps reduce hair growth. Laser hair therapy has become a very popular, very affordable, effective profitable non-surgical cosmetic procedure. Men and women want to discover the ease, beauty and self-confidence of hair-free skin can now have the attractive appearance they’ve always wanted.
Laser energy has been used since the 1990’s to selectively target and disrupt hair follicles but leaving the skin unaffected. The process takes from several minutes to several hours, depending on the area of the body involved. Laser hair removal works by using a low-energy laser or light source to target the hair follicle. The laser is attracted to the melanin in the hair follicle where it is converted to heat energy that can destroy the stem cell in the hair follicle and prevent future hair growth. A percentage of the follicles are instantaneously and permanently disabled with each treatment. The skin also takes up part of the laser energy, but it has the ability to lose heat quicker than the hair follicle, and is left intact. Hair has a larger amount of melanin than skin, therefore it attracts the laser energy more readily than skin. Individuals with darker hair and lighter skin are easier to treat as there is a greater differential between the amount of melanin in the skin and hair. However, a breakthrough in the laser technology now allows patients with darker skin to be treated safely and effectively. There have also been advances in treating both light blond and red hair. These advances are FDA approved. White hairs still do not respond well to laser therapy.
Laser hair removal works best on the hairs that are in their “anagen” or active growth phase. Different lasers have different types of delivery systems. Some laser heads are placed directly on the skin while others are placed about an inch above the treatment area. The laser is systematically fired over the areas to be treated. A small pin pricks to the skin is felt with each laser shot, and this discomfort is usually tolerated well. A cooler is used to reduce the heat and discomfort of the laser on the skin, and this can be built into the laser head, or it can be a separate cooling unit that blows onto the skin. Within 30 minutes of treatment, the area may become pink or red, and this may last from a few hours to one day. In most cases, topical anesthesia is not necessary.
Until recently, laser hair reduction worked only on light-skinned, dark-haired individuals. A breakthrough in the laser technology now allows patients with darker skin to be treated safely and effectively. Treatments vary from 3 to 8 depending on the area and are required at 4 to 8 intervals in order to achieve a 60 to 80% reduction in hair growth. Periodic re-treatments might be required even after the initial set of sessions due to hormonal changes and other factors.
Laser hair reduction is usually packaged in a series of treatments thus providing specialty pricing or the patient can pay per treatment. Treatment costs generally are priced per area. The laser technician is required by the Colorado State Medical Board to be certified.
