Decorative tattoos have a history dating back at least 5000 years. The desire to remove them has probably existed for just as long. There are a growing number of people that are choosing to remove their tattoos. Individuals find they bring back unwanted memories of the past, affiliations with undesirable elements of our society, or others find that tattoos may be detrimental to their health and eventually are the cause of skin cancer or some other type of skin disease. Career concerns, weight gain, bad artwork or art placement, changing lifestyle or personal taste are just a few reasons that people decide to remove their tattoos. Studies show that approximately 10% of Americans have some kind of tattoos and of that percentage 50% want them removed. Early attempts to remove tattoos have had less than desirable results, bad scarring, injuries, infections and irreversible hypopigmentation.

Today laser technology is the preferred method of tattoo removal. Lasers remove the tattoo by breaking up the pigment colors of the tattoo with a high-intensity light beam. Tattoo ink is removed by using this specific wavelength of light which passes into the skin, but is absorbed by the ink. The rapid absorption of light energy causes the tattoo ink to break into tiny particles which can then be removed by the body's natural filtering systems. The more laser treatments the patient has, the more effective treatment. The aesthetic industry advises that a medical trained professional perform the laser reduction therapy. Over treating can cause damage to the skin and eventually lead to scarring. Laser has advanced enough to treat all kinds of tattoos. The removal treatment is between 6-10 treatments, approximately 6-8 weeks apart at a cost of $250 - $1,000 per session depending on the tattoo. The curriculum includes: Patient Care (Patient Selection, Pre & Post Treatment), Management of Complications and Tattoo Removal.
